What a day! We began construction work at the church in Chivoc, a community covering three low mountains. We split into three teams and we rotated through different work site activities led by Juan, Walter and Mario. One group bent rebar pieces for the columns of the wall of the church. Another group tied rebar together with wire for the church wall columns. The third team worked to demolish an existing concrete wall and then dig a trench for the footings and piles for the next church wall. Demolishing the wall seemed to be the crowd favourite. We had a good laugh as some of the girls let loose with primal screams as they wielded their sledge hammers and pick axes!Pastor Victoriano shared his personal testimony after a delicious lunch. We were inspired to hear his story - a traumatic family event which changed his life at an early age, a life of poverty and an eventual turn to alcohol as a young family man before being freed by Jesus. We felt his love and passion to tell others the good news about Jesus. He shared that alcoholism, gangs and the occult have had a foothold in the community. We hope that we can find that same passion to be a light to our neighbours and communities back home!Spirits were high on the school bus ride back to San Raymundo. We sang “Jesus Loves me” in Spanish. (There may have even been a Neil Diamond song.). We left our backpacks at Pastor Victor’s and walked into San Raymundo where we were treated to ice cream and a fun tuk tuk ride after a hard day’s work. We feel blessed.
