Today we took a break from our ministry projects to spend some time as a team and experience the beauty of Guatemala.
We left Pastor Victor’s at 6am for an early bus ride from San Raymundo to hike at Pacaya Volcano. The two hour ride took us through areas we hadn’t yet seen, including some beautiful rural farmlands and some of the most spectacular mountain views the country has to offer.
It was so much fun to watch the team laughing and talking together as we hiked the trail, kicking ash and rolling stones along the way. After a climb of nearly 400 metres we reached a lookout that gave us a stunning view of Pacaya Volcano and sweeping views of the valley below.
As we descended we had a unique opportunity to steam roast some marshmallows in hot vent holes on the volcano and even saw a stand where someone was selling pizzas he’d cooked over the heat from the ground. Definitely a new experience for all of us!
After our hike we spent a few hours in the city of La Antigua, the old capital of Guatemala. While walking the old cobble stone streets we were able to get some lunch, practice our bartering skills while buying souvenirs in the artisan markets and seeing the local culture.
After our supper at Pastor Victor’s, we finished our day with a great discussion on the value of Sabbath and taking time to step away from our toils to rejuvenate. Now we head to bed to get rested for another full day tomorrow.
