Being a Light

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in Heaven."
Matt 5:16 (The text with tonight's devotion.)
Today started with a delicious breakfast, and then the men headed out to the building site of houses one and two, where they framed the floors of both buildings. You may ask why a 12x10' square building takes so long: the answer is coconut fibre wood. It is very hard: screws often snap in half before they are half in and drills overheat. It is also not milled like in Canada- some studs go from 3/4" to 1.5" over 8'! The owners of the houses were very happy to help; carrying wood up the narrow path and helping with construction. Lucas neglected to wear safety squints, and as a result utilized the eyewash tubes in the first aid kit for the first time we can remember. The piece of metal was successfully rinsed out. Walls were framed on building one and the intent is to get that orange paint and butterflies on asap. As you can see in the photo, the special needs girl is so excited about her new home: she sat in the window just beaming with delight.
Meanwhile, Carla headed to town to exchange currency. This ended up being a long, drawn out process as many places either didn't have enough money, or they were offline. She finally succeeded in securing about a third of what was needed, but could at least pay the bill for the building supplies so they could get delivered!
The rest of the gals got games and fun things ready for the youth night, and then, after lunch the entire team went shopping for food hampers. The types of food we bought include rice, several types of noodles, coffee, sugar, corned beef and sardines. This will get distributed Saturday to various needy families. We ended the day with another delicious meal, followed by devotions and some great discussions about what it means to be a light to the world. It is our hope and prayer that by serving those people here, that they would begin to ask questions and be led to faith, and also, that while we seek to serve, we do not do so for our own honour, but rather to Glorify the One who has blessed us with the means to make these things possible.
